2019 Cedarcrest High School Coaching Staff
John Fiala, Head Coach, LB
Coach Fiala's passion for football has truly been his entire life. He started his football career in 5th grade followed by playing at both University of Washington and in the NFL for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This is his first season as Head Coach for the Cedarcrest High School although he has played a role as coach locally in both Jr. Red Wolves Football program as well as Cedarcrest Lacrosse. Coach Fiala is a longtime resident of Duvall with his family including wife and three children. John is incredibly passionate about the game of football, the growth of each individual and building a family of champions for our future. He can’t wait to have our community show their Red Wolves spirit this season. Go Red Wolves!
Jonas Lawson, Offensive Coordinator, QB
Coach Lawson has been coaching football for 21 years at both the Jr and High school levels. He started as an assistant coach for 8 years at both the Five Star and Issaquah Jr football programs. He then got the opportunity to move up to the High School level and spent 1 year as the head freshman coach at Issaquah High School and the next 9 as the Varsity WR/DB coach. He then accepted the Offensive Coordinator job at Interlake High School, he spent 2 years there before coming on board at Cedarcrest as the Varsity WR/DB coach last season. Coach Lawson lives in Duvall with his wife Robin and 2 boys Trevor and Jared. When not coaching, Coach Lawson enjoys camping, golfing, watching the Seahawks.
Pete Hartzell, Defensive Coordinator, DB
Coach Hartzell has 10 years varsity football coaching experience with Woodinville and Monroe coaching defensive backs, linebackers and defensive coordinator. Pete grew up in Monroe and ran track and played football. He graduated from Central Washington University where he was a four-year letter-man and honorable mention all-league Cornerback. Coach Hartzell also spent five years playing semi-pro football for Snohomish County Vikings. Pete and his wife Cindy have two daughters, Maya and Tatum, a boxer named Lulu, a hound dog, Casey and two cows. He enjoys his family, rooting for CWU and Wazzu, traveling and hanging out at the beach.
Tom Shannon, JV Head Coach, Assistant Coach
Coach Shannon has been coaching football for 20 years both in the Jr. program and at CHS. He lives in Carnation with his wife Micci (Team Photographer) and their son Sean. Tom loves God, his wife, kids (Corey, Amber, Chelsea, TJ and Sean) and grand kids (Alexus, Sophia, Trinity and Leslie), Harleys, music, the beach and teaching young men the game of life.
JJ Suman, JV Defensive Coordinator, Assistant Coach, QB
Coach J.J. Suman joins the CHS football staff for his first season, after many years coaching youth football with the Jr. Red Wolves, as well as other programs. Coach Suman is passionate about supporting the young men of our community, living in the Snoqualmie Valley for most of his life and attending Carnation Elementary and TMS. Coach Suman works in youth social services and when he is not coaching football at CHS or serving Cedarcrest Select Basketball as a volunteer coach and board member. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Jessica, and their two Jack Russell Terriers.
Brandon Savage, Assistant Coach, OL
Coach Savage has been coaching football for three years. In addition to coaching the Offensive Line, he is also Director of Football for the Junior Red Wolves. He lives in Duvall with his wife Brooke and children Jack and Aria. He formerly played football at Inglemoor High School. His enjoys spending time with family, great music and working hard to enable a successful football program in the valley.
Jeff Gerde, Special Teams, Assistant Coach
Coach Gerde is joining for his fourth season coaching football with a heavy emphasis on kicking, punting and long snapping technique. He lives in Duvall with his wife Ginger and Nathan. Coach Gerde enjoys golfing, camping and College football.
Jesse Prohn, Assistant Coach, WR
Coach Prohn has been coaching in the Duvall and Carnation area for the last 9 years. Coaching and assisting his two boys Jayden and Casen. From football, baseball, basketball and soccer. Jesse resides in Duvall with his wife Bianca. He has a passion for sports and teaching kids and young adults about working together to reach an objective or a goal. Most importantly how to do it while having FUN. You can find Coach Prohn at all the local golf courses enjoying a round of golf.
Matt Mayer, Assistant Coach, DL
Coach Mayer has been coaching football for six years and soccer for over 15 years. He has coached football in the Jr. Red Wolves program, Skyline Spartans as well as Crossfire and various youth programs and high school programs in Spokane. His family lives in the Riverview School District with his two children Caleb and Aubrey and wife Blythe. Matt is invested in growing his players to be the best version of themselves and applying their natural talents. Coach Mayer loves to go camping, spend time with family and friends and enjoys time working on their property on the tractor.
